The inspiration behind this lightweight jersey was scientist and mathematician Alan Turing's research into the processes behind the formation of patterns in nature. But, how does that relate to cycling in The Ocean State? You might recognize the Turing patterns in the ripple patterns in sand formed by winds at the beach, in the skin of a giant pufferfish or on the surface of a brain coral. Turing was also a lifelong cyclist, and was known to have ridden a bicycle with a chain that kept skipping and falling off. Rather than asking for help, the eccentric student devised an equation to confirm that the chain was dropping at specific intervals, and help anticipate the moment in order to identify the source of the problem. That equation is hidden inside the back pocket, if you can find it.
